Like millions of others, NCIS is my favorite show on television. There are many reasons why I tune in each week, however one name speaks volumes, Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Boss, is the second coolest character to ever grace the small screen. A few weeks ago an episode covered young Jimmy Palmer getting ready to adopt a baby. When the birth mother changed her mind and kept the child, he was heart broken. Gibbs steps in, as only he can, to tell him to “fight for his family”. The scene was moving as Palmer realized Jethro was telling him to not give up on adoption, that there would be other opportunities.
Why was this story line so compelling for me? Both of my children are adopted. As I watched this program my mind quickly moved to a time in a Columbus courtroom where a judge spoke to Sonya and me. She told us that once the adoption was final, this young child would be ours forever. Nothing could break the family bonds of this commitment, in the words of the judge, “He will be a Griffith forever!” At that moment the judge asked, “Mr. Griffith, do you have anything to say?” Was this a trick question? I always have something to say, problem is it’s not always worth hearing.
I stated to the courtroom that this is exactly how God treats us. In the first century you could disown your biological children, but a child adopted could not be severed from the family, ever. God adopts us into His family. We are forgiven, loved, and accepted by the one who spoke all things into existence. Once in that family nothing can take us out of the loving arms of God.
In Ephesians 1:5 it says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
Today, if you feel alone and unloved know that God will welcome you into His family forever. The second coolest on TV, who’s the first? Come on, do I have to write it down? Joe Mannix!!!!
