Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Samuel was the first major prophet mentioned in scripture. His name meant “God has heard” and he spent his life from the age of twelve striving to fulfill God’s calling upon his life. One night God spoke to him in a dream, thinking it was his mentor Eli, he asked Eli about what he had heard. Eli said the message was not from him and told Samuel to go back to bed. After God spoke to him two more times, Samuel realized it was the voice of God that he was hearing and he went and told Eli.
1 Samuel 3:9 “So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Once Samuel responded, God told him that the wickedness of the sons of Eli had resulted in their dynasty being condemned to destruction. Eli asked Samuel to honestly tell him what he had been told by God. Upon hearing Samuel’s words, Eli said, “God should do what seems right in His own eyes.”
Samuel lived to follow the Lord. It reminds me much of my own father. Dad was a truck driver who thought his work was only a means to take care of his family. Though he never preached or sang in church, he knew his calling was to be a man who followed God and lead his family and others to a better understanding of the word of God. Thus, my dad taught Sunday School for over twenty-five years. Touching the lives of countless numbers of people. Many of them, myself included, went on to serve the Lord as pastors, teachers, and leaders.
One life committed to the calling of God can make a huge difference in eternal destiny of others.
